Yummy Yoga is gentle yoga, suitable for everyone.
Contrary to public opinion, you do not need to be flexible or skinny to join a yoga class! You just need to be open-minded and ready to give your body the nurture and care that it deserves. This 75 minute class will include gentle asana (poses), pranayama (breathing practice) and meditation (relaxation). The style of yoga is mostly Hatha, with variations in style depending on the fortnightly theme. The philosophy of this yoga class is " No Pain, More Gain". The emphasis of the class is solely on stretching, strengthening, releasing and relaxing, all of which our bodies and minds enormously benefit from.
Most of the classes are held at the Theosophical Society Hall in Orewa, and a couple of them are held at The Connection in Silverdale. For the addresses of both yoga studios, please see above under "more".
Most of the classes are 75 minutes long. They usually consist of about 5 minutes active relaxation at the beginning (aimed at helping us transition from our day and become "present' to our mind/body connection). This is followed by about 60 minutes of gentle asana (poses) practice and then the class typically ends with about 10 minutes of breathing exercises and meditation. Ideally, you will leave the class feeling stretched, strengthened and thoroughly relaxed!
The content of the General Yummy Yoga Classes are the same, based on a transitional fortnightly theme. For example, the focus of classes over a two week period might be "Balance", while the next fortnight may focus on "Strength". The poses chosen for those classes will reflect the theme and there will sometimes be some theory/yoga tips also connected to this theme.
Although this is a class aimed at the General Public, there is a mix of ages and yoga experience within each class. Therefore, higher options are offered during class, particularly for those who have a lot of experience and who would like to further intensify the pose. It is important for beginners and those of a mature age, to remember to listen to their bodies and stick to the lower options (if and when appropriate).
In addition to this, there is emphasis put on one pose each fortnight, in order to help yogis become more aware of the finer details of one particular pose. There is a corresponding hand-out with information and photos of this "pose of the fortnight" which is then emailed to those who attend the class. This can then help to build a personal repertoire of poses, which can encourage a subsequent home practice.
There are props available in classes at The Theosophical Hall for everyone but if you would like to bring your own mat, blanket and/or cushion, we encourage you to do so. It is also a good idea to dress warmly, in layers if possible.
Restorative Yoga is available on Thursdays nights and Friday mornings. This is a floor based practice, suitable for everyone, aimed at stretching and relaxing the body. The poses are often followed by a 15-20 minute Yoga Nidra or a long, guided relaxation, aimed at quietening the mind and resetting the nervous system.
There is also a Yin and Yang class on Monday evenings at 5:45pm. This is a new class this term, starting in Feb 2017. This class will combine some yin poses and a section of yang poses. Each fortnight there will be a different sequence, following a theme-based program.
Also available are Kid's Yoga, Parent/Teen, Teen's Yoga and Senior's (Gentle) Yoga Classes.
