What is Kids and Teens Yoga?
Practitioners have long attested to the benefits of yoga for both adults and children including stress and pain relief, improved circulation and digestion, better body alignment and posture, increased concentration, deeper, more relaxed breathing, and a sense of well-being and belonging.
In addition to this, yoga is a fun way for children to develop important skills in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Even at a young age, children often feel pressure at school socially as well as academically, in addition to the pressure of competitive organised sports. It is easy for girls and boys to become self-critical, and lose confidence in themselves as they grow and change. Yoga is a great remedy; there is no judgement in a yoga class about how a child does a pose or plays a game. Doing a pose “perfectly” is not the aim of yoga. The aim of yoga is to nourish a child’s inner and outer strength and
his/her self-acceptance.
The nurturing atmosphere encourages children to relax and have fun while they develop not only strength, coordination, flexibility and balance, but also body awareness, better focus and concentration, and self-confidence.
What happens in a typical Kid’s Yoga Class?
In Yoga for Kid’s classes, there is a balance between structure and spontaneity, so that kids learn to listen to each other as well as express themselves creatively. As we all know, kids learn best when they are happy and having fun so Yoga for Kid’s classes interweave story, song, games, poses, relaxation and massage. This allows children to learn in a multi-sensory environment, which explores kinaesthetic, visual, aural and physical stimulus. This makes Kids Yoga classes MUCH more active than Adult Yoga classes. In fact, they are pretty exhausting for the teacher!
Some of the creativity that is experienced in class may come for a Story-book, which encourages lots of fun yoga poses mirroring nature or animals, which of course if the origin of all yoga poses. Other classes may comprise of picture cards or maps, encouraging kids to go on a magical journey around the world, learning about different animals and cultures.
Throughout the class kids are encouraged to listen to their bodies, something which many adults struggle with. They also learn to work in a group, and in pairs, developing trust and empathy through poses, games and peer massage. Positive touch is hugely encouraged and helps the kids learn empathy and compassion for one another.
On a side note, please see here for more information about the benefits of peer massage please see http://childconnection.org.nz/
You will see that I am listed under the Child Connection Massage Facilitators here http://childconnection.org.nz/instructors/
